Members will be aware that a number of petitions were launched in the summer in relation to rising concerns about the curriculum in our schools. Some of these petitions concerned Black History but others focussed on issues to do with colonisation and diversity more widely.

As a consequence of these initiatives, the Petitions Committee held an oral evidence session on 18 November and have launched two surveys; one for primary and one for secondary teachers. The survey will close at 9am on Monday 7 December.

We know that Religious Education plays a key part in a well-planned, broad and balanced curriculum. It is significant alongside other subject areas in helping children appreciate their own and others’ identities. Please help us to tell this important committee why Religious Education is important in this area.
