Issues in Abortion: some Christian perspectives
Link to Resource
Issues: Abortion is part of the REQuest website which is designed to support the teaching of Christianity at GCSE. The language is clear and readily accessible to all students, and it offers a range of ideas on Christian attitudes. Sections include:
i) Abortion and the law.
ii) Christian attitudes to abortion.
iii) What the churches say (Roman Catholic, Anglican, Church of Scotland, Methodist, Baptist).
iv) Glossary.
v) Introduction to the world of LIFE
vi) What Christians believe about the sanctity of life.
vii) What do you think? Should a Christian have an abortion?
Classroom suggestions:
a) Ask students to investigate the viewpoints from the 5 different churches, and make a short presentation (2 minutes maximum) on the views that are held in common and the views that are different.
b) Ask students to create a three-column table (on screen or on paper) or provide a template for them to use. They should label the columns with the different church groups. Working in pairs or small groups, students identify details which are relevant to each heading for the Christian denomination they are studying.
They might include:
i) a quote from a sacred text
ii) an situation to illustrate
iv) a summary of the position of the group
v) a query or question that they would want to raise
