Film and Faith
Link to Resource
Film and Faith is a resource from REonline that gives ideas and suggestions for using film in the teaching of RE. It includes reasons for using film, ideas for integrating film into RE teaching in both the primary and the secondary phases, guidance on film copyright and classification, and sources of film resources.
Classroom suggestions:
a) Look at the list of the films that are on offer and compare these with the films that you have access to or the films that students have access to. Look for films that fit in with the areas of the specification you are covering. The key questions to ask are:
1. How does this film tackle a part of the specification?
2. How does this link to relevant religious themes?
3. What are the small sections of the film (4-8 mins) that can be used?
b) For suggestions on specific films see: www.resourcescentreonline.co.uk/filmandfaith.html
Just a few films that are excellent are:
a) The Green Mile, for capital punishment;
b) Bruce Almighty, on the ideas of the divine and on miracles;
c) Contact, the nature of existence, what should we believe in?
d) Dark Star, on death, war and the interface between technology and belief;
e) eXistenZ, nature of belief, existentialism and reality.
