RE is not in the EBacc!

Posted by: Rosemary, 20 July 2011

The government has circulated a Statement of Intent to Local Authorities and schools. It makes it clear that there is no change to the subjects in the English Baccalaurate - RE is not to be included.

Paragraph 20 of the document states: ‘Last year’s publication of the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) prompted much interest and debate about the range of subjects which it should encompass. After consideration of representations, and to provide schools with certainty, the Secretary of State is minded to leave the subjects unchanged i.e. English, maths, two sciences, history or geography, and an ancient or modern foreign language.’

Please note that the government made a change overnight to Paragraph 27 relating to English. The Statement of Intent included above is the version available on 21 July ; check the DfE website to ensure you have the latest version.

The DfE’s press release can be found here.
NATRE will continue to press the government to identify ways of supporting what the Secretary of State has said remains a compulsory subject which is to be etaught to all pupils, and to ensure that schools are accountable for meeting legal requirements.
