Master Teacher Standards proposed

Posted by: Rosemary, 24 October 2011

The Review of Teacher Standards has now formulated its draft proposal that there should be one further set of standards established in addition to the new teachers’ standards, and that these new higher-level standards should define the standards of those teachers whose practice is regarded as outstanding. The Review is provisionally calling these Master Teacher standards, and they envisage that these would replace the existing post-threshold, Excellent Teacher and Advanced Skills Teacher standards.

The draft proposal is below.

The Review is testing its first draft of the Master Teacher standards with key users of standards during a period of engagement, running from 21 October until 11 November 2011.

The Review is due to submit its final report and recommendations to the Secretary of State later in the autumn.

Inter Faith Week 2011

Posted by: Rosemary, 20 October 2011

National Inter Faith Week takes place this year from Sunday 20 to Saturday 26 November in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Information about the Week can be found on the Inter Faith Week website.

The Week aims to strengthen good inter faith relations at all levels, and to increase awareness of the faith communities in the UK, celebrating and building on the contribution which their members make to their neighbourhoods and to wider society. It also aims to increase understanding between people of religious and non-religious beliefs.

Last year, the Week was marked in many schools and RE teachers played an important part in organising events such as classroom discussions in RE about inter faith relations; class visits to local places of worship; and exhibitions with stalls about different faith communities. A list of event ideas and resources developed by NATRE and NASACRE to aid schools in marking the Week are available here.

Events for the Week are being listed on the Inter Faith Week website. Both public and ‘closed’ events can be listed. We would be delighted to have details of any events you might be involved in organising. As well as helping show the breadth of involvement in the Week, listing of any event or events which you are planning to hold could also help inspire others to mark the Week.

Events can be listed either by completing the online form or by downloading the events listing…

Posted by: Rosemary, 20 October 2011

NATRE is pleased to announce the launch of the 2012 Hockerill/NATRE prize for innovation in RE teaching. Details of the prize and how to apply are found on the Hockerill Foundation website.

The prize is in two parts:
a) £700 for the school to enable it to purchase new RE materials.
b) £400 as a bursary to the teacher to part fund attendance at a specialist educational course for RE.

The prize recognises that the needs and requirements of the Primary and Secondary sectors are different and is therefore given separately in each sector.

The closing date for the receipt of entries is 31 January 2012. Judging will take place in the following two months, with the successful prize winners being notified by Easter. The prizes will be presented at one of the Hockerill /  NATRE RE PGCE conferences in the late spring / early summer of that year.
