MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY

The UK is about to host the G8 summit in Edinburgh and this will be the focus for the ‘Make Poverty History’ campaign. You will probably be aware that Bob Geldof recently encouraged students to ‘bunk off’ school on 6 July in order to demonstrate in Edinburgh against global poverty.

At RE Today, we would rather support teachers to encourage their students to remain, safely and legally, in school on 6 July. To that end, we offer here a range of material that schools can use to engage with the issues of the G8 conference, whether in normal lessons, out of class activities or as part of a specially arranged ‘conference day’ of your own.

In order to provide as wide a range of material as possible to support creative responses to the G8 summit, we are being joined by a number of other RE and Citizenship publishers (particularly the Stapleford Centre and Damaris Trust). We have set up a simple webpage which will provide a one-stop resources menu for this material. See www.damaris.org/g8

All of the support material available via that page will be available free of charge at the time of the G8 summit, providing a great opportunity for teachers to try out the material. So, don’t miss out on these resources yourself, and please pass on the news to any other teachers you know who are not already RE Today subscribers.

The MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY coalition has its own website with a schools section. This will also link to the materials provided by Damaris Trust, RE Today and Stapleford:- www.makepovertyhistory.org/schools/resources.shtml

Together let's help our students make a difference by contributing actively in school to the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY campaign.
