Aims of the day:
This course will explore a variety of approaches to teaching and learning in RE in order to engage pupils and help them to make good progress. There will be a focus on practical activities to try out and take away, including varied approaches to RE, engaging pupils in handling texts, using visual resources effectively, planning enquiry-based learning in RE and applying research into how the brain works.

Teachers will take away at least ten practical and ready to use classroom ideas for 11-16s, including access to the presentations, downloadable from the RE Today website after the course.

Aims of the day
This one day course will enable primary teachers of 9 - 11 year olds to approach the values and relationships part of SRE with confidence beause it provides all you need to teach engaging, well-planned units of work that link SRE with PSHE and SRE.

Each participant will receive a copy of Body & Soul (RRP £37.50), a teaching and learning pack exploring Relationship Education, designed to sit alongside KS2 Science/PSHE work on Puberty and Sex Educxation for 9 - 11s. There are 30+ hours of classroom exploration with templates for planning through RE and PSHE time. Body & Soul explores six themes: Love and Intimacy; Working Together and Thankfulness; Promises and Respect; Forgiveness and Reconciliation; Sharing Hard TImes; Celebration and Pleasure.

The pack contains a teacher’s book, DVD with additional resources and 16 picture cards for visual learning. There are also six stories specially written by children’s author Ruth Whiter for reading aloud and talking about in circle time.

Aims of the day
This one-day course addresses practical ways of learning about and from three religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The course will improve teachers’ and co-ordinators’ subject knowledge and provide them with a variety of engaging and effective strategies for learning about and from these three religions. Resources and ideas will be shared, supporting creative, visual, active and enquiry-based learning for children from 5 - 11.

The course will support teachers in:

  • creating a planned learning experience for children in each of these religions
  • ensuring progression in teaching about and from Christianity, Judaism and Islam across the primary age range
  • awareness of appropriatre learning strategies to deal with challenging topics such as prayer, belief and religion in the community
  • using a variety of effective and engaging learning strategies in RE
  • feeling more confident when teaching Christianity, Judaism and Islam

The Primary Curriculum and RE: current directions is a 48-hour residential seminar. It will look at research into primary school curriclum design issues and at their application in the RE classroom. Research into children’s understanding in RE will contribute to an exploration of classroom practice.

Speakers include: Prof. Teresa Cremin, Dt Karen Walshe and Dave Francis.

What do the seminars offer?
The Westhill Trust Seminars offer teachers and researchesr a chance to deeper theirt engagement with RE by exploring recent research from within and beyond the classroom. Hearing from leading experts in the field and meeting with practitioners from around the country makes for stimulating and challenging discussions, with an emphasis on applying what has been heard.

Keynote sessions led by prominent academics form the core of the semiar weekends. Shorter sessions from teachers and researchers offer ‘provocations’ to deeper thinking, with opportunities for reflecting, responding and participating in practical activities.

What is included in the fee?
The £100 fee includes full board in conference accommodation. Seminars start on Friday evening with a meal and the first keynote address, and run until Sunday afternoon.

Assessing Pupils' Progress in RE

Aims of the day
Suitable for subject leaders as well as classroom RE teachers, including NQTs in RE and teachers with other specialisms, this one-day course applies ‘assessing pupils’ progress’ ways of working to 11-14 RE at levels 3-7.
